AWARENESS AND PRACTICE OF EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING AMONG CHILDBEARING MOTHERS IN NSUKKA URBAN AREA, ENUGU STATE

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is the most efficient type of infant feeding for the first six months of life that protect infants from infectious diseases. This study examined awareness and practice of exclusive breastfeeding among childbearing mothers in Nsukka urban area of Enugu State. The questionnaire and in-depth interview guide were used as instruments for collection of data from 618 respondents. The quantitative data gathered was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) while frequency distribution tables and percentages were used to present the results. Chi-square (χ²) was used to test the hypotheses; binary logistic regression was used to predict the effect of independent variables on a dependent variable while the qualitative data collected were analyzed in themes as complement to the quantitative data.
