Abstract

This study was designed to develop task instruction sheet in fashion illustration for teaching clothing and textile students in colleges of education in Anambra state. The specific objectives were to: (i) Identify task in fashion illustration to be used in the development of task instruction sheet for teaching clothing and textiles students. (ii) Develop task instruction sheets in some selected task in fashion illustration. (iii) Validate task instruction sheets. (iv) Identify the ultimate users of the task instruction sheet. (v) Compare the performance of students instructed with task instructional sheets (experimental group) and those instructed with lecture/demonstration method (control group). The study adopted R and D and quasi-experimental design and was conducted in Anambra state. Four research questions and three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A total of 79 respondents were used for the study. This consisted of 33 final year students and 14 lectures from Federal College of Education (T) Umunze and 11 lecturers and 21 students from Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe. Two sets of questionnaire were used to elicit information from the respondents and criterion reference tests were used to check the students’ performance. The instruments for data collection were subjected to content and face validation by three experts and the internal consistency of the instrument was established using Cronbach alpha which yielded the reliability coefficient of 0.98. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test statistic. Based on the data analyzed, the following findings were made; (i) the task instruction was superior to the expository method in enhancing students learning and skill acquisition. (ii) Home Economics lecturers considered the task instruction sheet as being more appropriate for teaching fashion illustration. (iii) Students exposed to the task instruction sheet were able to make the five tasks in fashion illustration correctly thereby achieving the stated specific objectives. Based on the findings of the study, conclusions were drawn and recommendations made. There is need for teacher educators responsible for training NCE teachers in College of Education to encourage their students to use task instruction sheet as it facilitates self-learning and performance of practical tasks during training session. The preparation of task instruction sheets and its usage should be incorporated into curriculum of teacher preparation programme in College of Education and Universities. Further areas of research and possible limitations of the study were highlighted.
