INFLUENCE OF STUDY HABITS AND ATTITUDES ON EXAMINATION PERFORMANCE AMONG BASIC NURSING STUDENTS IN IMO STATE

Abstract

Poor examination performance could lead to waste of human resources and tarnished individual esteem. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of study habits and attitudes on examination performance among basic nursing students in Imo State. The objective of the study was to determine and compare the influence of study habits and study attitude on examination performance of basic nursing students in Imo State. A descriptive correlational study design was used. All 207 final year students from four basic nursing schools were used in the study. An adapted Study habit and Study attitude questionnaire was used for the study. 194 copies of the questionnaire were returned at deadline. Collected data were subjected to descriptive statistics of frequency, mean, standard deviation and percentages and analysed using ANOVA statistics. Probability value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results were presented using tables and figures. The major findings of the study were that majority (67.5%) of the respondents have moderate study habit. Majority (64.9%) of the respondents have moderate study attitude. The relationship of study attitude and study habit on examination performance was moderately positive at 0.71and 0.73 respectively. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the study habit among students from the four selected nursing schools. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the study attitude among students from the four selected nursing schools. The study concluded that study habit and study attitude moderately influences examination performance such that a more efficient study habit and/or study attitude may moderately influence basic nursing students towards higher examination performance. It is thus recommended that basic nursing students should keep improving on their study habit and study attitude as they are instrumental to the achievement of better examination performance.
