Abstract

The purpose of the study was to ascertain the effectiveness of electrical/electronics technology programmes in technical colleges in Enugu State. In order to achieve this purpose, four research questions and a hypothesis were formulated to guide the researcher in the investigation. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 119 consisting of 115 electrical/electronics graduates (craftsmen) and 81 artisans. There was no sampling as the entire population was the sample size. A structured questionnaire, titled measuring the effectiveness of electrical/electronics technology programmes in technical colleges in Enugu State was the instrument used for data collection. A five-point likert scale was adopted in structuring the items of the questionnaire. The purpose of interpretation of the data collated and analysed, mean scores, frequency and percentage were used for research questions while t-test of independent sample and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for the Null hypothesis of no significance difference. Presentation of data was done by the use of tables. The tables were accompanied by brief notes describing the findings made from the data presented. Based on the findings of the of the study, the following recommendations were made: (a) There should be adequate collaboration between technical colleges and industries for the effective teaching and learning of the skills required by the industries and world of work. (b) Government should encourage self-employment through policy actions, incentives and credit services. (c) Supervision of teachers should be closely monitored by the school authorities to ensure that all the subjects that will expose learners to all the trades/ occupations in electrical/electronic course are covered. (d) Entrepreneurship education should be included in technical college curriculum and should be taught vigorously to ensure that students of electrical/electronic graduates with the skills that will enable them to open and manage small enterprises effectively.
