Use of Numerical Index Methods for Quantifying the Productivity of some Soils in Southeastern Nigeria

By

Abstract

Numerical index methods for the evaluation of the productive potentials of
soil using easily measurable crop and soil physical and chemical characteristics
were assessed using two approaches at Nsukka, Abakaliki and Awgu in southeastesn,
Nigeria during the 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 planting seasons. The first
method involved the modification and evaluation of a soil productivity index
rnodel to predict the effect of soil degradation on soil productivity. Its
applicability and validity, using the three sites and maize as a test crop, were
evaluated. The second method involved the quantitative evaluation of the
restorative or depletive effects on soil of some soil and crop management
practices adopted by farmers.
