Physiological Response of Muturu, N’Dama and Boran Heifers to Ambient Climatic Changes in The Humid Tropics

By Nwosu C.c., Kamalu T.n, et al

Twenty heifera, wed eight te ten months st the nart of the experiment, bun 5n tha same calving season, and under the rsma rearing and management conditim, were rtudied for four months in the dry season at weekly intervals. The objective of the study was to find out the weight gain and the relative reactions of thecattle breeds, as determined by respiration, pulse rateg and rectal temperature to the derived savanna and hot tropical environment of Nsukka, Nigeria. Five heifers from each type of cattle wed, namely white and brown Boran, N'Oama and Muturu, were involved in the experiment. Highly significant differences were found among the breeds in each of the three charateristics, both for morning and afternoon readings. The Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) for March was significantly higher than those for January ad February, indicating that the month of March imposed the greatest heat stress on the experimental cattle. With regard to the heat tolerance index, the ranking order of the attfe types were: white Boran, 96.6, brown Boran, 92.4, N'darna, 87.1, and Mutuu, 80.5. On the whole, it was found thatwmteBoran cattle adapted best, whereas the Muturu adapted least to the dry season conditions at Nsukka, Nigeria. The brown Boran withstood the heat stress better than the N'dama. Differences in reiatiwe ability of the animals to withstand heat stress were attri- buted to differences in size, skin thickness, coat colour and body weight gain. There is need for further research into the morphological and productive characteristics of these breeds at Nsukka as this information would be beneficial to beef cattle improvement in Nigeria.
