Design and Implementation of a Microcontroller-Based Carbon Monoxide Pollutant Monitoring System for Industrial Facilities

Abstract

This research work is concerned with the design and implementation of a microcontroller-based pollutant concentration monitoring system. Environmental air pollution has significant influence on the concentration of constituents in the atmosphere leading to effects like respiratory infections and global warming. Consequently, an air pollution monitoring system is of utmost important. The traditional pollutant measuring equipment is costly, cumbersome and power consuming, and can seldom be used for air quality reporting in real time. The project describes an industrial air pollutant monitoring system implemented using MQ-9 gas sensor, Arduino UNO microcontroller from the ATmega328 datasheet and a PC for data presentation and analysis. The Object Oriented System Analysis and Design Methodology was used for the analysis of the software part with the aid of C# programming technologies, PHPMyAdmin and MYSQL database technologies. The system developed was able to measure CO and LPG pollutant concentration; trigger the evacuating fans in case of emergency, classify pollutant level, and display pollutant level on a PC and save measured data in a database for future access. The data acquired from the monitoring system can be used to periodically contact employees who are judged to be at risk due to over exposure for medical checkup.
