Petrology of the Basement Rocks of the Adikpo-Vandeikya Area, Obudu NW (Sheet 291 NW) South-East Benue State

Abstract

The area studied is situated within the south-eastern part
of Benue State, lying between 6'45'~ and 7°00t~, and 9°00t~ and
9°20f~, It is underlain by migmatitic gneisses, amphibolites
and granite gneisses. Into these have been emplaced pegmatitic
rocks, dolerites and basalts. The western part of the area is
unconformably overlain by Cretaceous arkosic sandstones.
The dominant foliation trend of the rocks varies from N-S
to NE-SW. These trends represent imprints of the Pan African
orogeny, Locally, NW-SE and ENE-WSW trends are preserved and are
considered to be relics of the pre-Pan African deformation. The
variations in structural orientations in the rocks suggest that
the area was subjected to polyphase deformation,
