SOCIOCULTURAL FACTORS INFLUENCING YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES IN CALABAR MUNICIPAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE

Abstract

The study looked at the sociocultural factors influencing youth participation in community development programmes in Nigeria using Calabar Municipal Local Government Area of Cross River State as a study area. The instruments for data collection were the questionnaire and in-depth interview guides. The sample size used for the study was 610. The quantitative data gathered were analyzed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences using percentages (%) and Chi-square (ᵡ²) was used to test the hypotheses, while the qualitative data gathered were analyzed in themes as complement to the quantitative data. The findings show that there is no statistically significant relationship (ᵡ²=(N=399), 3.466; df=1, pے .063) between sex of respondents and participating in CD programmes. Also, it was discovered that there is statistically significant relationship (ᵡ²=(N=399), 229.614; df=1, pے .000) between parental influence and participating in CD programmes. The result further showed that there is statistically significant relationship (ᵡ²=(N=399), 14.673; df=1, pے .000) between respondents level of education and participating in CD programmes. Also, it was discovered that there is statistical significant relationship (ᵡ²=(N=399), 37.809; df=1, pے .000) between government assistance and participating in CD programmes. Result from regression analysis show that age, sex, marital status and occupation had no relationship with any of the two dependent variables, awareness in CD programmes and participation in CD programmes.
