Abstract

When the great American geographer George Peskins wrote man and Nature in 1864, in which he surveyed the ways in which man has transformed the Earth's surface, he considered the various ways in which humans might affect the quality of the atmosphere and nature of the earth's climate. However, just over 100 years later, it is this very area that is the cause of greatest concern to many scientists and to others interested in environmental matters.
