Abstract

The British-created chieftaincy institution among the Igbo was bound to fail, In the first place, the institution was contrary to the political culture of t he Igbc, It is too much t o expect, a people used to a republican system of government and collective decision-making to be s u b j e c t e d to one man, Worse still, the person imposed as a chief was probably from the scum of the society; he wen could have been a s l a v e or a member of caste and t h e r e f o r e of no consequence in the commnunity.
