Quality Characteristics of Selected Fruit Juices Marketed in Nigeria: Implications for Policy

Abstract

The quality characteristics of selected fruit juices marketed in Nigeria were evaluated to ascertain their concurrence with the specifications set by the Nigerian Industrial Standards for commercial fruit juices. Some of the selected juices analysed were Cofrutos orange, Cofrutos tropical mixed fruits, Don Simon Multifruta, Chivita mango, Chivita pineapple and PureJoy apple fruit juices. These juices were subjected to room and outside storage at mean maximum temperatures of 27.8 and 36.50C respectively for 12 weeks. Periodic analysis was carried out every two for 3 months Results of this study show that all the fruit juices analysed did not meet some of the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) requirements or specifications.
