Avian influenza (Bird flu) :Its implications for Nigeria

By Tochukwu, C. Okpara

I can still remember the looks on everyone's face in my house when they
announced the arrival of Avian influenza and the death of people who had
contacted it. Everyone was shocked. This was a type of meat that most families if
not all couldn't do without and now it was a source of ill-health and possibly
death to anyone who was unlucky to come in contact with those which had been
infected. People stopped eating them almost immediately and this became a big
cause for concern to farmers especially poultry farmers. But how did the issue of
Avian influenza come about in the first place?
